She studied the sweep of his dark lashes as he focused on his task. His hair burned red under the lantern light, like polished mahogany. One long lock of it, escaping its binding, straggled down his neck.

“There.” He eased out the tiny bit of wood and dropped it. He raised the hurt finger to his lips.

“Thank you.”

He moved his kiss to her next finger. Ever so gently, he sucked the tip of it.

Evangeline swallowed. “I have no sliver in that one.”

His dark gaze swept up to regard her. He moved to the next finger, again caressing with his mouth.

A feeling almost like panic welled up inside her. “Why are you doing that?”

He sucked the tip of her small est finger. “So you will ask me to kiss you.”

“You do not mind it when I ask you to kiss me?”

“No.”

“I—I supposed you thought me silly, or forward, or unwomanly, or—”

“Evangeline. Ask me to kiss you.”

She drew a hoarse breath. “Captain BlackWell, will you—”

“Cal me Austin.”

“Austin. Will you kiss me?”

He leaned down, and smoothed her hair from her face. “Indeed, I will . If you promise to become my wife.”
